Dear Dads,
Many people would say that a husband’s first responsibility, after his relationship with Jesus, is to provide for and protect his wife and children. While this is important, the Bible has something even better.
God’s top priority for a husband is for him to be a servant-leader like Jesus was, and to give of himself for his wife in ways that are best for her.
The husband’s top priority for his wife should be to love and lead the way Jesus loves and leads the church. To do this, the husband needs to be a “servant-leader” and put his wife before himself.
To do this properly, you will need to be a husband who leads by serving, not by being “the boss” or worse yet a dictator.
Ephesians 5:25-30 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her….and cares for….”
We need to treat our wife as well or better than we treat ourselves. We need to have agape love, which is loving a person even when they are not so lovable.
It is critical to know when Ephesians says “the husband is the head of wife” that being “the head” does not make a person superior, but brings in leadership qualities and other responsibilities.
Jesus gave Himself up for us, and we need to follow His example and do the same for our wife. While we will need God’s ongoing help to do this, we need to love and lead our wife by being a “servant-leader” like Jesus was.
